In Richard Rohr’s book Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, the prolific author and Franciscan priest espouses that the first half of life is about ego building, while the second half is about enriching the soul. Put another way, as we age and mature, we look to go beyond a survival dance to one that challenges us all to dance with the sacred. Much of life’s journey is about unlearning versus learning. When faced with despair and challenge, Rohr indicates this is an invitation to pursue meaning, wisdom and compassion. Those who are enlightened and fulfilled in their second half of life choose to live “generatively,” giving of their talents and wisdom to others. Happiness is no longer a function of acquiring but rather of giving freely.
Whether you’re in your first half or second half of life, this book study is sure to instill meaningful dialogue to help shape your New Year. We hope you will consider joining us for a 4-part book study held on consecutive Tuesday nights at First Church throughout January and February.
